Saint Michael's House Malmesbury
This is believed to have been the site of St. Michael's Chapel, one of the original monastery chapels built by Aldhelm. One of his first miracles occurred during its construction. Many expensive roof timbers were cut ready for use but one was too short. The craftsmen brought this to Aldhelm's attention and after he prayed it was found to fit. This church was burnt down twice and each time this rafter was the only roof timber to survive the destruction. The present building dates from 1796 and has been used as a school, a malt house, at the beginning of the 20th Century the XXX Inn and more recently as offices. In 2003 it was refurbished and turned into a townhouse and flat with a cottage at the rear.
