Malmesbury Town Football Club was formed around 1897. By 1910 Colonel Charles Miles of Burton Hill House provided financial support. During the 1920s and 30s matches were played here at the Railway Hotel, Douglas Field (near Backbridge Farm where Dyson is now), Quobwell Farm on Tetbury Road and the Suffolk Arms (the site of which is now a small housing development on Tetbury Hill). The Treasurer reported to the Annual General Meeting in the White Lion on 9th June 1936 that the club was running at a loss. Attendances were poor, new officers could not be found and the club was wound up. Around 1947 Jock Patterson, a demon centre forward who later scored 8 goals in one game, helped to reform the club. To generate cash they formed the Skittles League in 1949 - this has now turned into a thriving organisation in its own right with nearly 100 teams participating. In the late 1960s the football club's name was changed to Malmesbury United. In 1976 the fixtures of Swindon Victoria were taken over and the name was changed again. Since the reformation of the club matches have been played at a variety of locations including St. Aldhelm's Mead, Brokenborough Hill, Corston, Corn Gastons before the school was built and later on that school's playing field. The present ground was used for post war livestock markets until 1966 and the club moved here in the 1970s. However when the pub was demolished in 1984/6 a pitch at Seagry was used. Many trophies have been won over the years but the club was the first to win both the 1sst and 2nd Divisions of the Wiltshire League in 1972/3 and were runners up in Division I in both 1976/7 and 1995/6. The first team now plays in the Hellenic League which has led to the ground being fenced and floodlighting being installed.
