There has been a bridge here for many centuries. In the 1648 bird's eye map it is shown as a wooden drawbridge. The present structure dates from the mid 19th Century. Note on the eastern parapet in the centre a short metal stanchion. This is the remains of a gas lamp that used to light the road. When James Jones [H.J. Knee Ltd.] was Mayor, he had this removed as he could not see why the Borough Council should pay to light the Rural District Council's half of the bridge!
