Hector Cole talk at Lechlade
Members (and new members and guests @ £3 p.p.) will be welcome at this talk to Lechlade History Society, on:
MONDAY, 21st SEPT Lechlade MEMORIAL HALL, 7.15 for 7.30pm:
”Farmor’s School and its long History in Fairford”
The first Farmor’s School building on this site, beside St Mary’s Church, opened as Fairford Free School, on 24th November 1738, and consisted of a school-master's house and 2 class-rooms with a cellar and outbuild-ings, including a brewhouse!
Whilst this familiar three-storey building dates from 1738, this photograph was taken in about 1930. An extension was opened in 1815 for a Girls’ School run separately from the Boys’ School, until the two schools were amalgamated into one co-educational elementary school in 1922. To find out more about the past story of what is now our highly successful local comprehensive school, for all pupils of 11 to 18, join us in Lechlade Memorial Hall on 21st September.
This story has been fully researched by Fairford’s well-known local historian, JUNE LEWIS-JONES, and it will be presented by Mrs MARGARET BISHOP. June herself hopes to be with us that evening, and to be able to take questions.
Subscribing and new LHS members will wish to note that our 2010 Programme will be launched on 16th Nov, when Hector Cole will give his talk on “Archaeological Ironworking” (brought back from January). Before our Annual General Meeting on 19th October (at 7.15pm prompt), Derek Cotterill will give an illustrated talk on “The Ancient Parishes of Broadwell and Langford”.
